Although he may not be as big in the entertainment world right now as Megan Fox or Brad Pitt, Tony Curtis was an iconic actor and at the age of 85, he recently passed away. It’s never good news to here of anybody’s passing but what makes this case even harder to swallow, is that smoking played the largest role.
Although he lived to be 85, the Spartacus and Some Like it Hot actor suffered from COPD and various lung problems for years. COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a progressive disease that makes it increasingly harder and harder to breath. There is no cure and smoking directly causes it. While it may be easy to sit back and tell yourself “well, the guy was 85 and a smoker. It was bound to eventually happen. He had a good run,†you may want to consider the fact that Curtis hadn’t touched a smoke in 30 years.
Even after he quit and before he had any noticeable health issues, Curtis still suffered from his previous years of smoking. Smoking causes irreversibly negative effects on your body, even after you quit. For all those younger people out there who smoke and aren’t worried about the side effects of smoking right now because they “can quit later,†or keep putting it off, this is a prime example of why you should never start in the first place. Tony Curtis was there; he was young, famous and successful. Smoking was ‘cool’ back in the day and he didn’t embrace the reality of the risk until later in life. While he made a decision to quit that probably prolonged his life by many years, smoking still claimed Tony Curtis in the end.
